TSC has provided radar systems engineering and interface support to
the FAA to investigate the effects of the addition of an Airport Surveillance
Radar Version 11 (ASR-11) radar system at O’Hare International
Airport (ORD). This analysis identified the potential impacts of the
ASR-11 installation on the automation system operations and interfaces
at the Elgin TRACON, and resulted in recommendations and suggested hardware
modifications required to interface the ASR-11 with the ARTS-IIIE system
at the Elgin TRACON. The work was divided into two phases:
·
Phase I: Identify and describe the current surveillance automation
components and interfaces at the Elgin TRACON
Results: The development of an interface description document describing
the interfaces and providing schematics of the automation system component
interfaces at the Elgin TRACON.
·
Phase II: Detail the potential changes to the automation system
operations and interfaces, and hardware modifications that may be required
for installation of the ASR-11 at ORD.
Results: Two recommended implementations for interfacing the ASR-11
to the ARTS-IIIE, and three hardware modifications to accommodate the
ASR-11 at the Elgin TRACON.
